Did the PepsiCo Foundation Direct Donations to Fight Legislation?

April 21, 2017 by Russ Greene

Editor’s Note: Our colleague Derek Fields co-authored this piece with Russ Greene. The PepsiCo Foundation’s paperwork is notoriously indecipherable, but we have finally transferred its 2014 donations into legible and searchable spreadsheets. And this data suggests the PepsiCo Foundation may be directing its charitable donations to areas considering the most soda regulation. The Russells’ Blog has covered Coca-Cola’s efforts to influence science and policy for years. Yet some have asked why we have focused so much on Coca-Cola and not […]

What UConn Internal Emails Reveal About The Korey Stringer Institute

April 19, 2017 by Russell Berger

Not long ago I received a response from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request I sent to the University of Connecticut. The institution is the home of the Gatorade-founded Korey Stringer Institute (KSI). KSI’s CEO, Doug Casa, has been previously featured on our blog as a promulgator of hydration guidelines that encourage athletes to drink beyond thirst satiation. PubMed Begins Flagging Conflicted Research: Coke Science Now Searchable

April 18, 2017 by Russ Greene

Good news for public health; bad news for the International Life Sciences Institute: PubMed will now flag all new papers declaring conflicts of interest. As part of the National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest library of health science, PubMed houses over 27 million scientific citations. This change means visitors to the internet’s premier scientific search engine will now know what science PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, ILSI and others have funded. For years we have broadcast the fact that soda funding dramatically influences […]

#CrushBigSoda: Why CrossFit Supports Soda Warning Labels

April 14, 2017 by Russ Greene

If you follow CrossFit on social media, you know we support SB 300, California’s Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Safety Warning Act. And you also know that not everyone agrees with this position. Debate over the warning label tends to focus on whether sugar is toxic. The libertarian-minded also tend to wonder whether the state of California has the right to mandate a warning label on soda. Yet few have discussed CrossFit’s strategy behind supporting the warning label: so that health organizations like […]

Breakdown of The NY Post’s Latest CrossFit Hit Piece

April 8, 2017 by Russell Berger

When I first saw the New York Post article pictured above, my first thought was that it was likely an older article someone had reposted from around 2013, a time when sensational headlines about CrossFit killing people were all the rage. I was somewhat surprised to see that it was published yesterday. A close inspection of the article reveals much of what is wrong with journalism today. The piece was written by Gemma Wilson, News Editor for an Australian website […]
