CrossFit’s Attempted Comment on the National Physical Activity Guidelines

March 31, 2017 by Russ Greene

CrossFit Inc. has attempted to issue a public comment on the U.S. federal government’s upcoming 2018 National Physical Activity Guidelines. The Activity Guidelines website has not permitted our public comment to be posted yet. CrossFit’s unpublished public comment is available below, as is the longer PDF document attached to it. This effort falls within CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman’s overall strategy of driving Big Soda out of health science and policy. The Guidelines’ advisory committee includes individuals with major conflicts of […]

Coca-Cola Buckles to Pressure, Curtails “Science” Payments

March 29, 2017 by Russ Greene

Coca-Cola’s most recent round of funding disclosures shows the company has dramatically cut back on its monetary contributions to health and fitness-related endeavors. It cut its funding for these wellness-related partnerships to less than a quarter of its previous rate and is closing its more obvious propaganda outlets. Unfortunately, Coke is still firmly committed to slightly more disguised means of health propaganda, including the International Life Sciences Institute. The soda giant has released a list of the North American health and […]

Why “Do Whatever You Like” is Horrible Exercise Advice

March 28, 2017 by Russ Greene

Journalists, academics (soda-sullied and otherwise), celebrity trainers and other members of the nudging class agree: You should move more. But how? The nudgers don’t seem to think that detail matters much. Popular Science recently put forth, “… the best workout (really, truly, seriously)? It’s probably just the one you’ll stick with.” Or as Lifehacker alleged, “the best workout of all, according to experts, is simply whichever one you enjoy—because that’s the one you’ll actually do.” Gardening, water aerobics, CrossFit training, […]

Ohio State University’s Dr. Kraemer Fails to Disclose Advocare Funding

March 15, 2017 by Russell Berger

Ohio State University can’t seem to catch a break. Four years ago, OSU professor Dr. Steven Devor co-authored the now infamous “Devor study” on CrossFit. The study was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (JSCR) and became the subject of a lawsuit between the NSCA and CrossFit. While a federal judge recently ruled that the study contains fabricated data, and we have found numerous other examples of falsification in the study, the university has not penalized Devor or his co-author, Dr. Mike Smith. In fact, […]

The SNAP Festival of Corporate Hypocrisy

March 15, 2017 by Russ Greene

Editor’s Note: We are pleased to present this guest post by our colleague Derek Fields. There is no coherent way to justify buying poor people billions of dollars worth of sweetened beverages with taxpayer dollars. That does not stop politicians and junk food companies from trying, though. On February 16, the House Agriculture Committee held a hearing on the possibility of placing restrictions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, often called “SNAP” or “food stamps.” Big Soda’s influence at the […]

Muhtar Meets Pablo: Laundering Coke Dollars

March 14, 2017 by Russ Greene

As Coca-Cola and PepsiCo’s reputations approach Big Tobacco levels, the soda industry faces a dilemma. How can it continue influencing politicians, elections and scientists while minimizing reputational blowback? Soda’s solution is simple: money laundering. Last November, Washington state ordered a Big Soda lobbying group to pay the “largest campaign finance penalty” in U.S. history: $18 million dollars for “laundering money,” plus more recently, $1.1 million to cover the state’s fees and costs. The soda group, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, “willfully […]

Is the CrossFit Games Open all about Conditioning?

March 7, 2017 by Russ Greene

The CrossFit Games Open is all about conditioning. It’s generally five metcons over five weeks and rarely, if ever, tests maximal strength or power. So if you want to get ready for the Open, just train a lot of light weight and body-weight movements, and don’t worry too much about your max snatch. You only need to focus on heavy weights if you plan to make it to Regionals. You’ve heard these sentiments before. But does any data support them? A […]
