Write Your Legislator: Stop Anti-Competitive Fitness Bills

January 31, 2015 by Russell Berger

Below is a letter composed by John Manser, owner of CrossFit Dynamo in Georgia, urging his Senator to reject an anti-competitive bill sponsored by the ACSM. For a generic version of this letter to use in your own state, click here. If you are a fitness professional in one of the following states and don’t want to see the ACSM and NSCA succeed in using the police power of government to force you to pay for their certifications, please send a letter to […]

A Four-Year Degree vs. a Two-Day Seminar, by David Barnett

January 29, 2015 by Russ Greene

Editor’s Note: Dr. Lon Kilgore has published a new article in the CrossFit Journal that discusses “the biased belief that university degrees are the gold standard for personal trainers.” CrossFit Lubbock owner David Barnett responded that he “learned more in 2 days at my CrossFit L1 about human movement than I did in 4 years at a tier 1 university getting a BS in Exercise and Sport Sciences.” We asked David to tell his story on the blog: My name […]

Intro to Personal Training Licensure

January 26, 2015 by Russ Greene

An epidemic of epic proportions is killing Americans. Eighty million Americans are obese. Eighty-six percent of American health care spending goes to treating chronic diseases. These include “heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis.” In other words, they’re lifestyle-related diseases. Calculating the full death toll of lifestyle-related diseases is impossible. Alcohol kills 88,000 lives yearly. Tobacco kills more than 480,000 yearly. Obesity is estimated to kill 112,000 yearly. At least 680,000 Americans will die this year just from just obesity, alcohol and tobacco. The […]

The Best and Worst Fitness Magazines of 2015

January 24, 2015 by Russell Berger

Edited Jan 28th: Added a note about Michael Cazayoux’s instruction in TRAIN magazine. The first of January is to the fitness industry what Valentine’s day is to the business of selling greeting cards. Each year, following a combination of tradition and commercial messaging, untold numbers of couch-potatoes and binge eaters swear off bad habits and commit to a regular fitness routine. But where does the average person go when looking for information on how to make these changes? Like it or not, […]

Paleo Fraud in the International Journal of Exercise Science

January 19, 2015 by Russ Greene

Michael Smith and Steven Devor have gotten away with fraud – again. Not only did the duo publish another fraudulent study in a different scientific Journal, but that Journal is refusing to retract or correct Smith and Devor’s fraud. For those new to our blog, Devor is a defendant in a lawsuit alleging scientific fraud. Smith worked under Devor as a PhD candidate on multiple studies. Neither the ACSM, nor Ohio State University, nor CSU Chico has acted on Smith and Devor’s fraud. ACSM retains Devor as a fellow, […]

Tom Ricks and Jim Gourley vs. the Truth

January 2, 2015 by Russ Greene

Two weeks ago Jim Gourley published “The relationship between the U.S. military and the CrossFit program” to Tom Ricks’ “Best Defense” blog housed on ForeignPolicy.com. I sent Gourley and Ricks several emails to correct the article. When they failed to fix their errors, I wrote “Fiasco: Tom Ricks Casually Disregards the Truth about CrossFit.” Now, Ricks and Gourley’s coverage of CrossFit has gotten even worse. On December 22, the duo published “CrossFit: An Update.” What follows is a full rebuttal of its lines, […]
