Credential Measuring Contest; CrossFit Wins

October 24, 2014 by Russ Greene

Guest post by CrossFit Inc.’s Derek Fields: NBC Connecticut recently conducted a “Troubleshooters” investigation called “Questioning the Certifications of Your Personal Trainer”. The Troubleshooters claim to “ask the tough questions” and “solve problems”, exposing borderline scandalous stories like charity clothing drives that sell clothes to make money and police who use “excessive force”. Their story on personal trainer certifications focused on CrossFit’s Level 1 Trainer designation, failing to mention any other specific course that an individual can take to receive […]

Royals’ Wade Davis Adds 2 MPH to Fastball Training at CrossFit Gym

October 21, 2014 by Russ Greene

My article “Elite Athletes who do CrossFit” has generated much misunderstanding and attention. Let me set the record straight: The list isn’t exhaustive – many other elite athletes do CrossFit. And we’re not claiming the elite athletes ONLY train with CrossFit, but rather that they use it as part of their training to improve their general physical preparedness. Athletes Don’t Just Die, By Jon Phillips

October 15, 2014 by Russell Berger

This is a guest post by Jon Phillips, CISSN, Applied Physiology Lab, Mississippi College. I will not accept the unsubstantiated claims made by Dr. Joe M. Pressler in regards to the events that led to the death of high school football player Walker Wilbanks of Jackson Preparatory School in Jackson, Mississippi. On Monday August 25th, Wilbanks was pronounced dead at University of Mississippi Medical Center from complications related to an abnormal hydration status that presented during the previous Friday’s football game. Few […]

Why is The New York Times So Fascinated with CrossFit?

October 14, 2014 by Russ Greene

In her recent New York Times article, Heather Havrilesky asks “Why Are Americans So Fascinated With Extreme Fitness?” Like the ACSM, she uses “extreme” as a euphemism for CrossFit. The “extreme” label defames CrossFit and its participants, but on what basis? As Jeff Glassman wrote, “I dispute that CrossFit is extreme in any sense but results.” New York Times scribes have never articulated what part of “constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity” they object to. Is it “extreme” […]

CrossFit Athletes Dominate IMG Academy Testing, Revisited

October 11, 2014 by Russ Greene

Men’s Fitness recently ran a feature on the IMG Academy’s Ignite program. As you can see in the excerpt below, the article claims that CrossFit “assigns its Workout of the Day mostly at random.” This is not true. It’s not clear where Men’s Fitness got this claim from. CrossFit is not random. CrossFit Director of Training Dave Castro explains how CrossFit is not random in the following video from a CrossFit Coach’s Prep Course: My colleague Russell Berger also explained that CrossFit is not […]
