All CrossFit is CVFMHI, but not all CVFMHI is CrossFit

July 30, 2014 by Russell Berger

A few days ago, ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” published several articles and videos that took aim at CrossFit, painting our program as dangerous. They extensively covered the injuries of two men, Kevin Ogar and Brad Hawley. While there were many factual errors and inaccuracies within both the written article and the video produced for OTL, one stood out – ESPN falsely reported that Hawley and Ogar were both injured while doing “CrossFit.” So what is CrossFit and what isn’t? Most people simply […]

ESPN Failed Journalism 101

July 27, 2014 by Russ Greene

ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” tried to produce a show on injuries in CrossFit. They failed. Instead, they covered injuries outside of CrossFit, but tried to present them as CrossFit injuries. The result is a confused, misleading mess. First, ESPN discussed Brad Hawley, who fell from a bar and hurt himself. Unfortunately for ESPN’s journalistic reputation, this accident did not happen at a CrossFit gym. It happened at an IronTribe Fitness location. Kevin Ogar injured himself at an unlicensed fitness competition. […]

“The nature and prevalence of injury during CrossFit training,” Dr. Paul Hak, Part Two

July 10, 2014 by Russell Berger

In part one of this review of the JSCR’s most recent “CrossFit” publication, “The nature and prevalence of injury during CrossFit training,” we addressed the misquotation of the paper’s reported findings. In this post, we will detail some of the serious problems within the body of the paper. First, the data collected in this study came from an online survey, which solicited respondents via distribution “…amongst international CrossFit online forums.” A large, randomly selected group of CrossFit trainees would have reduced the chances of such a bias, but […]

Elite Athletes Who Do CrossFit

July 8, 2014 by Russ Greene

One of the most common myths about CrossFit is that no elite athletes use it. That’s completely false. Here are some top athletes who do CrossFit. It’s not a full list. There are 10,000 CrossFit gyms, and we can’t possibly know every elite athlete who trains at them, or who does CrossFit on their own. Also, these athletes use CrossFit as part of their training – it doesn’t replace their specific training. No strength and conditioning program could. Christie Rampone: captain of the gold-medal winning 2012 […]

“The Nature and Prevalence of Injury During CrossFit Training,” Dr. Paul Hak, Part One

July 3, 2014 by Russell Berger

The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research recently accepted a study titled “The Nature and Prevalence of Injury During CrossFit Training.” The authors, Mr. Paul Taro Hak, Dr. Emil Hodzovic, and Mr. Ben Hickey, are based at the All Wales Trauma and Orthopedic Training Program in Cardiff, UK. It has been published as an abstract (ahead of print). Of 132 respondents, 73.5% reported having sustained injury during CrossFit training. What the authors did get correct is noting the statistical difference between […]

Dr. Lon Kilgore on Exercise Science’s Defining Failure

July 1, 2014 by Russ Greene

While we are often critical of the work of exercise scientists, these critiques are aimed not at the pursuit of scientific knowledge, but the failure of the academic leadership in this field to meet the basic requirements of the scientific method. But there are exceptions. Consider Dr. Lon Kilgore. Kilgore has authored and co-authored many works that integrated science and practice. If that feat sounds easy, it’s not. Take a look at his Amazon.com author page, for example: On June 20 Kilgore published a new article […]
